PLDT & SMART Startup Innovation Challenge 2023

PLDT & SMART Startup Innovation Challenge (“PSSIC”) 2023 is an annual problem-solving hackathon event organized by PLDT Innolab, a PLDT Enterprise's innovation laboratory which focuses on creating customer value through engagement with startups and technology vendors, as well as co-development with innovation partners. 

This 2023, start-up companies will be invited to submit their entries that will work on real-world challenges, redesign existing solutions, and ensure prototype development using identified technologies such as (1) Internet of Things, (2) Artificial Intelligence, (3) 5G, (4) Automation, and (5) Other Emerging Technologies. The selected Top 10 start-ups will be invited to participate in Bootcamp Sessions in PLDT Innolab office where industry experts be assigned as mentors to assist them with their Pitch and Demo Showcase to be conducted during the PLDT Enterprise's PH Digicon 2023. 

In accordance with the Philippine Data Privacy Act of 2012 and other applicable Privacy Laws, we share with you the principles that govern how your personal data will be collected, processed, and shared when you register and submit your entries to PLDT & SMART Startup Innovation Challenge 2023 and throughout your participation in the Bootcamp Sessions and the Pitch and Demo Day.

Why we collect and process your personal data

Apart from the company information that we will collect such as Registered Business Name, Business Address, description of the Solution or Product, and other relevant data to determine eligibility of submitted entries and select the Top 10 start-ups to participate in the Boot Camp sessions, we will collect the following Personal Data of Start-Up Company Team Members for the following purposes:

  • Complete Name

  • To register your submitted entries and to properly address all event communications to you;

  • If you are a member of any of the selected Top 10 start-up companies, your complete name will be processed for pre-registration at the Boot Camp session venue and for all activities during the 4 to 5 week Boot Camp Sessions

  • Designation / Position / Role in the Start-Up Company

  • If you are a member of any of the selected Top 10 start-up companies, your designation or role in your company will be used by PLDT Innolab to match the subject-matter expert who will serve as the mentor to you and your team. 

    For example, if your company’s product or solution entry is related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), and your role in the company is related to business development and marketing, PLDT Innolab will match a “mentor” from its roster of invited sponsors and technology partners. These mentors will provide you with expert advice on how you can improve your proposed solution or product from a business development perspective. If you are a the head of software development in your AI start-up, you will be matched with an industry expert who can advise you in your area of responsibility in the company.

  • Email Address

  • To register the submitted entries and to send all event communications.

  • If you are a member of any of the selected Top 10 start-up companies, your email address will be processed for pre-registration at the Boot Camp session venue and for all activities during the 4 to 5 week Boot Camp Session.

  • Company Name and Company Address

  • To register the submitted entries and validate if start-up company is properly registered as a business entity

  • If you are a member of any of the selected Top 10 start-up companies, your Company Name will be processed for pre-registration at the Boot Camp session venue and for all activities during the 4 to 5 week Boot Camp Session.

  • If you are one of the winning Start-Up team members, only your Company Name and Address will be published in all post-event press releases.

We will also utilize photography and videography to cover the Event for purposes of media and press releases, and to highlight memorable aspects of the entire affair. In this regard, photos and videos that may include you may be published in our Social Media accounts, Websites, and in other media channels where our press releases may be published.

Why your personal data is shared

We have partnered with Ideaspace Investments and QBO Innovation Hub to deliver consultation services and facilitation support throughout the entire Program that includes planning and program design, workshops and mentorship sessions to participants, as well as support during the awarding and closing ceremonies. Both Ideaspace and QBO will directly engage with you and all the members of the chosen Top 10 Start-Ups during the Bootcamp sessions up until the culmination activity to be held as part of the PH Digicon 2023 event.

The workshop and mentorship sessions will be held at the PLDT Innolab office located in Vitro Makati, a building owned and managed by PLDT’s subsidiary, ePLDT Inc. PLDT will share the full names and company name of the Top 10 start-up team members with ePLDT for pre-registration and to facilitate building access in ePLDT’s Visitor Management System. For verification purposes and to receive a Security Badge Card, please bring a Valid Identification Card with you. Your Valid ID will be temporarily exchanged for the Security Badge Card, and you can reclaim it once you return the Security Badge Card. When your Personal Data is shared, we ensure that it is done on a confidential basis, through secure channels, and in compliance with applicable privacy laws and regulations. Only personnel with a need-to-know will have access to your personal data.

How your personal data is protected

The integrity, confidentiality, and security of your personal data are important to us. This is why we strictly enforce this Privacy Notice and have implemented technical, organizational, and physical security measures that are designed to protect your information from unauthorized or fraudulent access, alteration, disclosure, misuse, and other unlawful activities. Your personal data is also protected from other natural and human dangers. We likewise require these security measures from our Partners and Subsidiary.

Should you proceed with your registration and participation in the Event, PLDT Innolab shall retain your registered Personal Data throughout your participation in the PLDT & SMART Startup Innovation Challenge 2023 no later than November 30, 2023.

If you are awarded as Winners in PLDT & SMART Startup Innovation Challenge 2023 during the Culmination Activities during PH Digicon 2023 event, your Name, Company Name and Signature on Acknowledgement Forms will be retained by PLDT until November 30, 2024 for finance and internal audit purposes.

Your rights and choices

The Data Privacy Act gives you certain rights to your Personal Data. Subject to exceptions under the law, you are entitled to request:

  1. Access to the personal data we process about you.
  2. Rectification of your personal data if it is found to be outdated, inaccurate, or incomplete.
  3. Erasure of your personal data in cases where it is no longer needed to achieve the legitimate purpose of its processing.
  4. Restriction of processing of your personal data in limited circumstances.
  5. Portability of your personal data so that you may receive a copy thereof or that we transmit the same to another company on your behalf.

Moreover, you have a right to object to the processing of your personal data, such as in cases when we process your personal data based on our legitimate interests or for purposes requiring your consent. Please note that this will not affect the lawfulness of the processing that was carried out before you withdrew your consent or PLDT’s right to continue parts of the processing based on other legal bases than your consent. If, however, we have not provided you with another legal basis justifying the processing of your personal data in this privacy statement, we will stop the processing and delete your personal data.

If, despite our commitment and efforts to protect your personal data, you believe that your data privacy rights have been violated, we encourage you to come to PLDT first so that we can work together to resolve your complaint. You have the right at all times to register a complaint directly with the National Privacy Commission or to make a claim against us with a competent court (either in the country where you live, the country where you work or the country where you deem that data privacy law has been infringed).
